On July 21, President Biden bowed out of the 2024 presidential race after a faltering debate performance at the end of June that sparked widespread calls from Democratic officials for him to step aside. Biden did so through a letter he posted to social media and later explained his decision in an Oval Office address. Shortly after his initial announcement, Biden endorsed Kamala D. Harris, his vice president, to succeed him.
During his time in office, Biden passed major legislation on climate change, economic relief, prescription drugs, infrastructure and other matters, as well as rallying a global coalition against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He has pledged to seek major changes to the Supreme Court before leaving office.
